Originally a small farm that started growing coffee for family and friends, Carlos Coutinho quickly realized his land was excellent for coffee and the farm grew. The first plantations started in the Distrito region as a practical strategy for crop diversification. It was not long before the farmers realized that the climate and soil combined with the technology and experience already implemented in the management of other crops provided great potential for the production of specialty coffee. Now the region, where most coffee grows around 1,200 meters, is known for several coffee quality awards. Carlos’ farm, Novo Horizonte, produces semi-washed and natural Catuai using both patio and mechanical drying.
